I think you are giving the ACC too much credit


First, unless the bylaws are changed conferences would have to do 2 divisions in order play a conference championship game. Given the WAC's failure with experimenting with the rotating quads back in the late 90s, I would not assume a power conference will be too eager to experiment with implementing the rotating quad/pod because the risk of losing some members may be too great.

If the ACC is going to stick with the permanent divisions and protected cross-division game, then I would not assume the ACC will do what the Big Ten did a few years ago and realign the divisions so the protected pairings make sense. If the ACC had any sense when it was developing the protected pairings, then it would have gone with the following pairs: BC-UMD and VT-UVA. Also, it wouldn't have insisted on using the divisions created in football for basketball too so instate rivals could be guaranteed to play each other twice a season.
